Car Boot

This project documents the popular weekend pastime, the car boot sale. The images were taken between 1993 and 1995 at the height of popularity of such sales.

They show the rush or desire to bag a bargain. By rummaging through someone else’s belongings and in some cases lives, sellers unwanted and sometimes wanted personal possessions come under the scrutiny of the buying public.

The photographs show the excitement and disappointment of discovering different bits and pieces as well as the sociable occasion of the morning and the inevitable boredom of waiting to sell your wares. Also included are various people at the sale with their purchased item, displaying what they had found. The car boot sale appears as a modern day, ram shackled market with a mix of experienced traders and novice sellers, offering everything from stolen goods, pirated cd’s and computer games, pornography, old arcade machines to household goods, art and furniture.

These pictures were taken at Merton Abbey Mills situated in south London, which has now been transformed into a hotel and business complex.
