Bars - North / South America and Europe: |
||||||||
This project is about the neighborhood or local bar in cities and rural areas and was photographed in 14 countries over two continents. Such bars serve the local community often becoming a center for the area, as well as being an after work stop off point. For some it is an all day drinking environment, for others it allows locals a break from their daily routine and a chance to drink with the owner or bar tender. The neighborhood or local bar provides lunchtime rest for the local workforce, after work drinks and the chance to start the day with an early morning coffee or spirit. These establishments are often overlooked and can come to be thought of as a source of problems within communities. Bars are a central part of the community and their atmosphere can range from the more relaxed sociable environment of European bars to the serious male dominated drinking environment of the Americas. The photographs describe the differing architectural styles and atmospheres of neighborhood or local bars, taking in 66 bars from city to rural areas. I was interested in the differences and similarities of having a drink in a typical bar in various countries. The bars ranged from being rooms designed to allow an escape from the local surroundings to a place that emphasized and celebrated local area, some were just simple rooms in which alcohol could be consumed. Through the images I hope to show a good cross section of local bars in the Americas and Europe, bringing together the differences and similarities of the bars and showing the varying ways they are built and decorated to allow an escape from the daily routine. |
