East West:

These images catalogue the story of Nici’s  journey from Eastern Bohemia Czech Republic to London between 1998 and 2003. The photographs describe the experiences and encounters, from falling in love and marrying myself to the discovery of each others cultures and countries set against the difficulties of immigration and settling in London. It also follows friends and family of Nici’s who moved west to start a new life.

The project sets out to show the mix of cultures between East and West and how the immigration laws can effect the decisions and choices people make and how they may become more vulnerable to their surroundings. The images run chronologically from our meeting, falling in love and the desire for us to have a life together in London. This was before the first wave of Eastern European countries joined the European Union and would have been unable for us to continue living together in London if we had not married.

The photographs attempt to humanise the large and complex subject of immigration and settling down in another culture and country within Europe through a journey of discovery and experience. A love story that grows and demises in parallel with a period of change in Eastern and Western Europe
