Fun Street

Deptford in the London borough of Lewisham is a historic area  associated with ship building and the royal dockyards which died out around 1869 The council have developed plans with private companies to regenerate the riverside area and the town centre which is currently one of the most deprived areas of London.

Deptford is currently in the middle of a re-generation which has raised rents on the high street forcing out local pubs and independent retailers for betting shops, pawn brokers (loan sharks) and 99p superstores. What happens to a working class area of London when the local groups and communities, gangs and families are ignored in favour of individuals with money moving in to the area.

Deptford starts to lose its character and the high street becomes like any other area of London its individuality becomes a sacrifice of the individual.

This is my view of an area with character, humour, sadness, crime, family, community, art and indifference to other areas of London. After living 7 years on Deptford high street here is an ode to Deptford and Lewisham .

Welcome to Deptford
