Still Smoking

This series of pictures concentrates on the older generation of smokers who were sold a lie about the benefits and reality of tobacco.

The photographs show smokers aged between 45 and 85. Smokers in their 80’s found themselves embarking on a habit unaware of the dangers of tobacco. Is was not until the 1950’s that tobacco health warnings became known, stemming from a realization of the adverse effects of smoking. Only recently have there been restrictions on advertising tobacco in different areas, including sporting events.

How a generation hooked on tobacco continues to smoke, often wondering why they should bother to give up at their stage in life or after consideration of their current situation. With the introduction of various clinics, drugs and self help, tobacco addiction is being taken more seriously, although their seems to be a feeling of to little to late for mature smokers.

Through the project I hoped to show the differences in attitudes between smokers aged between 45 and 85, as the awareness of the health implications became known to younger smokers. What their attitudes are know whether knowing the risks makes any difference at all, when you consider the surrounding influences or needs of smokers.

Questions asked about the smokers also accompany the photos
